Jigs and Bigs Fishing Report:11.17.23

Fishing has been winding down, and over the last 3 weeks we have had a few jigheads out there still getting after it!

Jerry got out only one time in the heavy rain a couple of weeks ago with the temperatures being 42 degrees and 8 to 10 mph winds, which made for a nasty morning of fishing on an Otis area pond. He said that the water temperature was 54 degrees after a nice warm week but this day was a 35 degree drop from the day before. He thought the bite might shut down but the bass were on fire. Jerry tried a number of different baits: spinnerbait, chatterbait, ned rig, and neko rigged five inch stick bait. He said that the neko bait was what the bass wanted and he found most of the largemouth bass in 8-12 feet of water, in weeds. Green pumpkin ruled the morning catching seventeen bass in three and half hours all twelve to nineteen inches. The weather forced me of the water with frozen hands would  have loved to put in a full day. With snow in the hill towns today and temps in the twenties next couple nights we’ll just have to see if they  are biting this weekend.

Nelson only got out once in the last couple weeks for a couple hours on a local valley lake that is most known as Congamuck. He said that this was his first time on this body of water and it lived up to its reputation of being a tough fishery. Nelson searched shallow with no action. He ended up finding some largemouth bass in 25-30 feet of water along with large schools of bluegills. All fish were caught on a dropshot with a flatworm and the water temps were right around 60 degrees.

I will try to get on the water any chance I get but my main focus will be filling the freezer with various game species. Good luck to everyone getting out into the woods. Also good luck to everyone pushing it to get out on the water. Temps are getting to the danger zone so please were the appropriate clothing and PFD.

Tim got out last weekend for the Erik Kaplans benefit tournament on the Ct river at the Oxbow. The cooler weather has the bronze backs chewing!  He said that water temps were steady at 49 degrees with a decent current ripping. The baits of choice for me were 1/2 oz weighted swim bait dragged on the bottom and a 1/4 oz ned rig. Tim said that the majority of his bites came casting up river and letting the current take the bait. They had 12 boats for this event with the winner boating 21.10 lbs of fish anchored by a 5 pound smallie and a 5 pound largie. Congrats Mario, and thanks to all that supported the event.  There’s still time to get out there and fish, just remember to be smart and be safe as the temps continue to drop.

Stay safe out there folks if you are venturing out on the water in this cool fall weather! Tight lInes!
