Jigs and Bigs Fishing Report:05.23.24

Happy Thursday folks!! Although considering we are going into the long weekend and I have been checked out all day, I keep thinking it’s Friday.

Tim TSJ didn’t get any fishing done in Western Massachusetts these week. but he did have a Team trail tournament down the Cape at Wequaquet Lake. He reported that the weather was tough both days, air temps being in the low 50’s with rain and wind! (Gross!) The water temperatures there were 62 – 63 degrees and he said that most of the spawn was done – as there were few bass on beds that we could see.

Tim said that Saturday was a solid pre-fishing day as far as the catch was concerned, but they got rained on. We were able to put a solid pattern together using finesse baits, but we all know that pre-fishing patterns sometimes don’t hold up for tourney day. I was able to get on 12 good size largies and a quality 20 plus inch pickerel.

Sunday for tourney day, Tim said that they had the same type of weather pattern, however not as wet. Unfortunately for the team, the pattern from the day before was non existent, but he did say that while he was fishing the docks his partner was random casting out deeper on the drops; and he started slamming them. Tim reported that the new pattern hit them right in the face! We were able to land enough fish to put us in the money at 5th place out of 21 teams. the best part was catching a fish with 3 minutes left at the weigh on site on front of all the teams that culled out our smallest fish to put us in the money!  Two points to focus on here: when multiple people fishing try different techniques, approaches, areas and never give up, you never know when that next fish will bite!!

Bobby Roast Beef only got out once before this week’s report, and he fished a southern Connecticut body of water that boarders Rhode Island. He was out on the Guest Cohost of this week’s podcast, Matt Thayer of Klondike Custom Creations’ boat. This place sees little fishing pressure as it’s often overlooked, but it’s got quite a nice variety of species in its 99 acre area. Bobby reported that the conditions started with clouds, and little to no wind. He sad that he began getting follows on a downsized spinner, and eventually hooked up to an average sized sunfish. Next he decided to get a little more subtle and threw a small jig and plastic and started biting pretty voraciously! Matt was throwing a drop shot with a super subtle plastic and he put the first two smallies in the boat. Ultimately, they caught the entire menu of available fish species ,which makes for a great day! The majority being chain pickerel and smallmouth. Bobby said that nearly everything, aside from the rainbow trout they hooked, were tight to overhanging brush or submerged timber in no more than 5 feet of water. In a side note, I did also get to review a local market and their claim to have “unforgettable grinders”. I think they need to attempt to retool their vocabulary, as I’ve already forgotten about that lunch.

If you are entered into the month of May’s J&B scavenger hunt you have a week and a day to get your fish in! I hope to throw in a few points, but the fishing for me has been tough and I have been also trying to entice the turkeys as we are on the last week of our season.

The weather for most of the long weekend looks like it’s going to be hot and sticky, which it has been all week, and rain coming in Sunday and Monday. Get out there and get after it! Have fun and stay safe! Tight lines!
