Jigs and Bigs Fishing Report 8.3.24

It is Saturday and I am a couple days late but I had to see if my saltwater excursions proved to be report worthy.

I took a group of gals out of NBP Mass and we hit the water with Captain Kyle if MA Charter Fishing. What a day we had. Two of these ladies never striper fished before and they BOTH landed fish over 40 inches. The water in the Merrimack was extremely warm for fish but Kyle knew and stuck to his plan!

Shawn the Fisherman got out “thrice” this week.

His first 2 jaunts were up on the St. Lawrence River with their friends at A-Bay Lures and he reports that the bite was all over the place. They landed fish around weedy docks, steep dropoff ledges, and mid-river shoals and he said decent Pike and Smallmouth were the fishy highlights of the weekend; dropshotting did most of the work in the River.

Shawn also took a post-front jaunt to a central Massachusetts lake for some dusk-into-dark fishing. While he didn’t land any trophies, he found a solid bite for the 3 hours he was there. Bass Jig caught a half dozen Largemouth shallow around timber and walls. He also saod he noticed the fish were very pale, probably as a reaction to the change in weather conditions.

It’s still summer, so go catch some fish!!

Shirtless Tim Jaques got out to the Berkshire’s with the infamous Bobby Roast Beef where the water was extremely clear water temps were 77-79. They  aimed to target some smallies, so they started the day on some drop offs and some shallows throwing top water and drop shot. Tim said he thought for sure they’d get some action on top water, but to no avail.

Next they moved along to some Rocky points and were even able to see a Smalley hit a drop shot on the forward facing. Tim’s next Bite he said he knew it was a good fish when he set the hook on it. My drag started going as Bobby asked. Do you need the net and I said I think so and I finally saw something flash I said what the hell do I have?! Well it turns out it was a 30+ inch northern on a little drop shot in about 20 feet of water. Bobby finally hooked up on one on a point, good pound and a half smallie.

Tim said they saw a lot of fish on forward facing, but couldn’t get them to commit to anything. Finally, they went chasing some largies. They landed some bites in shallow weedy areas and he was able to put two in a boat one on a finesse jig and the other on a swim bait near some lily pads. After he dropped off Bobby at the dock Tim fished about 45 more minutes where he hooked into a rock bass and a 3 pound largie came out chasing the rock bass and almost ate it. During the course of our day as we were fishing, another boat got our attention and said that they were stranded. They couldn’t start the motor and asked us if we could tow them in, not a problem, we were able to tow them couple hundred yards. To their rental house. They were very thankful. Lesson of the day: be nice to people.

Andy and Shawn and went out on Otis where they hopped on the water around 530 and off just before it was dark at 830. Andy said the water was in the mid to high 70’s. He reports he was trying a new technique to no avail while shawn was pulling fish into the boat. After a bit of taunting from Shawn he decided to just get something in the boat and tie on the reliable Wopper Plopper and was quickly rewarded when it was being retrieved over some weed beds. Much to Shawn’s chagrin he had to concede for a bit and tied one on himself. No pics, we were too busy having a good time.

Cousin Jon took the kiddoa out for a bit on the boat where all they got post storm front was a tiny and aggressive perch for miss Charlie.

The cutest catch of the report!

Looks like it is going to be a rainy week coming up if you get out there pay attention to weather conditions and water levels! Stay safe and TIGHT LINES!
